Makes perfect sense naming Spies captain. He will be available for the CC.

Stegmann to lead Vodacom Blue Bulls against Saracens

articles.comments (0)

Flanker Deon Stegmann will lead the Vodacom Blue Bulls on Saturday when they take on Saracens in a friendly match outside London. The Blue Bulls named their final travelling squad on Wednesday, just before departure to England.

Regular captain Pierre Spies will only play off the bench in his return to first class rugby after more than 12 months on the sidelines; hence the decision to employ Stegmann's proven leadership skills. The former Springbok flanker captained the Vodacom Blue Bulls with great success in the Absa Currie Cup competition in the past.

Another former captain, Victor Matfield, will travel to London as part of the coaching team and not as a player and will not be in action over the weekend.

A number of Matfield's Springbok team members who travelled to Europe in November will start the match, but flyhalf Handre Pollard will only be used of the bench as the playmaker has just recovered from a foot injury.

Jan Serfontein and Francois Hougaard will start, as well as Trevor Nyakane, who missed the season-opening friendly against the Cheetahs last weekend due to a back spasm.

"We are keen for a competitive outing that will test our combinations selected for this match," Vodacom Blue Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said. "We will be looking to give a number of subs some game time, but we’ll also be aware that momentum will be important during the match."

The Vodacom Bulls team is: Jurgen Visser, Jamba Ulengo, JJ Engelbrecht, Jan Serfontein, Bjorn Basson, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Francois Hougaard, Hanro Liebenberg, Lappies Labuschagne, Deon Stegmann, Grant Hattingh, Jacques du Plessis, Werner Kruger, Callie Visagie, Trevor Nyakane. Replacements: Jaco Visagie, Mornè Mellett, Marcel van der Merwe, Dayan vd Westhuizen, RG Snyman, Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg, Roelof Smith, Pierre Spies, Piet van Zyl, Rudy Paige, Handrè Pollard, William Small-Smith, Duncan Matthews, Jesse Kriel.

Kick-off is at 17h15 SA time.

• The Vodacom Blue Bulls will also play with the J9 Foundation's logo on their sleeve to create awareness for MND. The foundation, named after former Vodacom Bulls captain, Joost van der Westhuizen, is doing great work to create awareness for Motor Neuron Disease.

Claire Kaye-Grobler, from the J9 foundation: “Events like the up coming friendly game between Saracens and the Vodacom Blue Bulls are absolutely crucial in the global fight against MND, this disease is an otherwise forgotten about disease with no cure and no cause, it therefore discriminates against no one and we thus need people to stand up now and push for researchers to find a cure or cause and this will only happen with awareness.”

Well done Bulls.

Vodacom Bulls Fitness Report presented by Medihelp

Van der Merwe to miss Super Rugby opener

Vodacom Bulls prop Marcel van der Merwe will miss the opening week of the Vodacom Super Rugby season due to a medial knee ligament injury, it was confirmed on Monday.

The injury occurred on Saturday in London, when the Blue Bulls played against English club side Saracens in a warm-up friendly.

Van der Merwe injured his knee and pulled his hamstring in the second half and will be out for three to four weeks, team doctor Org Strauss confirmed on Monday.

The Springbok prop was the only casualty in the match and Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke should have a fairly fit squad to pick from for their first match, against the DHL Stormers at Loftus Versfeld on February 14.

The long term injury list remains the same:

Bandise Maku (pectoral, July), Flip van der Merwe (pectoral, mid-April), Hencus van Wyk (lisfranc fracture dislocation, end of February), Pierre Schoeman (ACL rupture knee, 15 July), Adriaan Strauss (calf, 9 Feb) and Jason Jenkins (quad, 2 Feb).

Bulls lose star locks

Jacques_du_Plessis_Bulls_Lions_Super_RugJacques du Plessis in Super Rugby last year

Jacques du Plessis and Flip van der Merwe will take up contracts in France at the end of the 2015 Currie Cup.

Du Plessis has signed a two-year deal with Montpellier and Van der Merwe will join Clermont.

The offer made to the 21-year old Du Plessis was way beyond anything the Vodacom Bulls could dream of putting on the table, according to high-performance manager Xander Janse van Rensburg.

'Jacques is one of the real upcoming stars in the game and this offer received from France is testament to that,' he said. 'We have been negotiating since June 2014 and he has indicated that he would like to return to the Bulls after the two years. That's good news to us, as he should also be in Springbok contention by that time.'

The Bulls also confirmed the release of fullback Ulrich Beyers, who will join Bordeaux-Begles in France with immediate effect.

Two fetchers for Bulls?

by Brenden Nel 10 February 2015, 12:56

Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke has a tough choice ahead when he decides on his loose trio combination for Saturday’s Vodacom Super Rugby showdown with the DHL Stormers at Loftus Versfeld.

The return to fitness of veteran Bok Pierre Spies, along with fellow Bok Arno Botha has made the choices a bit more spicy for Ludeke as he looks for the right mix going into the first game of what promises to be a tough season.

Not only does the coach have these two to choose from, but also has new acquisition Lappies Labuschagne, Currie Cup captain Deon Stegmann and under-20 rising star Hanro Liebenberg that will vie for the three spots on offer this weekend.

Spies will lead the team into battle, but that leaves an interesting choice for Ludeke – whether to go with the traditional mix or play two fetchers against a very good Stormers team.

Labuschagne has focused mainly on moving to openside in the pre-season games and has worked well in tandem with Stegmann, hinting that the coach may have found favour with this selection and is willing to risk it against the Stormers this weekend.

If this happens, it means that there will be no place in the starting line-up for Botha, whose pedigree is far too good to ignore.

The emergence of Liebenberg, who made an indelible impression in the pre-season games, will also cause some thought when the selection meeting gets going, as Ludeke is known to favour a big, hard running No 8.

The coach wasn’t giving too much away when he was quizzed on his selections, but it is likely the Bulls may stick to the same combination that looked good pre-season.

“You need quality players there and we need every one of our loose forwards,” Ludeke said.

“We’re definitely looking at a rotation system for our players and we will go with our best combination this weekend. There aren’t likely to be many surprises, as you saw in the pre-season games. The fact that Arno and Pierre are both fit and a guy like Hanro came through well in the pre-season games makes for good competition among the players.

“We have a lot of players there now that are in form, we’ve got good depth.”

The rest of the pack may be a fait accompli, with Victor Matfield likely to slot into the five spot, while Jacques du Plessis will continue his transformation to four. The front row, without both Marcel van der Merwe and Dean Greyling looks a bit thin, but will have Springbok Trevor Nyakane scrumming alongside his former Free State teammate Adriaan Strauss, with Werner Kruger likely to slot in at tighthead.

Morne Mellett had a good showing against Saracens and that may well see him get onto the bench.

Ludeke said the team is excited to get to this point and can’t wait for the season to kick off.

“We’ve worked hard in the pre-season to get to this point and we’re now at the start of the competition,” he added.

“We’re at home this weekend, and we’ve had a great pre-season in terms of results. We know it will be a battle up front again, it’s always a battle for possession of the ball.

The set phases will be massive, as well as the battle to get momentum on the gain line. We’re looking forward to it. We’ve worked hard and we believe in what we are doing. “

The Bulls are under pressure to perform this year after a poor 2014 season

Vodacom Bulls welcomes back Strauss

 articles.comments (4)

Vodacom Bulls welcomes back Strauss
Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke named Adriaan Strauss at hooker when he announced his team to play the DHL Stormers in the opening round of the Vodacom Super Rugby competition at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
Strauss, who made his Super Rugby debut for the Vodacom Bulls in 2006 (8 matches), is back in the Pretoria side after a long stint with the Toyota Cheetahs (for whom he played 97 times) and was put straight into the starting team by Ludeke.
The coach also included Vodacom Bulls debutants Lappies Labuschagne and Trevor Nyakane, but neither are strangers to the competition. Labuschagne played for Toyota Cheetahs in 27 matches (debut 2012) and Nyakane represented the same franchise 42 times (debut 2012).
The rest of the team consists of tried and tested players, with the most experienced captain in the history of Vodacom Super Rugby, Victor Matfield, leading the team onto the field for the 83rd time.
Regular captain Pierre Spies, who made his last appearance in Super Rugby in Round One last year against the Sharks in Durban, will play off the bench as he is eased back into action following his long lay-off.
Another player returning from a long lay-off is Arno Botha, who will start at no8 for the first time in 22 matches for his franchise. The loose forward last played for the Vodacom Bulls in 2013 and missed last season due to injury.
Ludeke, who will be in charge of the team for an eight consecutive season, expressed his excitement with kick-off a couple of days away.
“We have prepared well for this season, but one will only really know how you shape up once the tournament is underway. I believe we have a solid squad with good depth this year and players suited to the way we want to execute our style of play,” Ludeke said.
“That said, we are up against a formidable team with good confidence, as the bulk of them won the Currie Cup at the end of last season. We will have to start well and stay strong if we want to kick the competition of on a winning note. Luckily we start at home and hope to have our supporters out in big numbers at Loftus Versfeld.”
According to Matfield it will not necessarily be the match-ups between individuals that will make the difference, but rather a team effort.
“Each side has different strengths and game breakers, so the one that plays the best as a unit and use their scoring opportunities should come out on top. It is going to be a great game and we are really looking forward to it. We have prepared long and hard and now just want to go out and play,” Matfield said.
Ludeke included 20-year old prop Dayan van der Westhuizen onto the bench. The Junior Springbok player is recovering from a bruised foot and should he not be able to take the field, another SA Under-20 prop, Neethling Fouchè, will take his place on the bench.
The Vodacom Bulls team (with Super Rugby caps) is: Jurgen Visser (25), Bjorn Basson (71), JJ Engelbrecht (49), Jan Serfontein (28), Francois Hougaard (72), Handrè Pollard (13), Piet van Zyl (44), Arno Botha (22), Lappies Labuschagne (27), Deon Stegmann (79), Victor Matfield (c, 138), Jacques du Plessis (15), Werner Kruger (108), Adriaan Strauss (106), Trevor Nyakane (42). Replacements: Callie Visagie (38), Mornè Mellet (24), Dayan vd Westhuizen (0)/Neethling Fouchè (0), Grant Hattingh (34), Pierre Spies (103), Rudy Paige (7), Jacques-Louis Potgieter (56), Jesse Kriel (1).
•There are four centurions in the squad line-up. Victor Matfield 138 (Bulls 130 & Cats 8); Werner Kruger 108 (all Bulls); Adriaan Strauss 105 (Cheetahs 97, Bulls 8) and Pierre Spies 103 (all Bulls)
•Coach Frans Ludeke will extend his Vodacom Super Rugby as most experienced coach ever – He has coach the Vodacom Bulls in 109 matches and the Cats in 23 for a tally of 132.
•Victor Matfield will extend his Vodacom Bulls record as their most capped Super Rugby player to 139. He will also captain the side for a record 83rd time, which is also a competition record. It will also be his 16th season of Vodacom Super Rugby, a record he will now share with Tony Brown and Tana Umaga.
•Lappies Labuschagne and Trevor Nyakane will make their debut for the Vodacom Bulls.
•JJ Engelbrecht will play in his 50th match for the Vodacom Bulls.
•Should he take to the field, Dayan van der Westhuizen/Neethling Fouchè will make his Vodacom Super Rugby and Vodacom Bulls debut.

Plaasvervangers: Callie Visagie (38), Mornè Mellet (24), Dayan vd Westhuizen (0)/Neethling Fouchè (0), Grant Hattingh (34), Pierre Spies (103), Rudy Paige (7), Jacques-Louis Potgieter (56), Jesse Kriel (1).
