Kimi Raikkonen made his 2015 bow at Jerez on Tuesday and the Finn immediately gave the new Ferrari the thumbs up.

Having watched new team-mate Sebastian Vettel top the timesheets on the opening two days of pre-season testing, Raikkonen stepped into cockpit of the SF15-T on the penultimate day.

Although he couldn't match Vettel in terms of posting the fastest time, he still managed to be just 0.205s behind pacesetter Felipe Nasr of Sauber and also racked up 91 laps.

It was no surprise then that Raikkonen was pleased how proceedings went.

"It was a positive first day, a lot of improvements in areas where we had difficulties," the Finn said. "And obviously it's just a first day, and unfortunately the weather was pretty bad today. Somehow the circuit stayed damp for most of the day, but I think we had good running and we got some mileage.

"The whole package is quite a bit better than how we finished last year. Now we've improved in all areas.

"It's just the first day, the first day, and there are a lot of things to do, and a lot of things to try and improve, but it's definitely a positive start and we have something to work with."

Needless to say that Raikkonen knows you can't read too much into the pre-season timesheets.

"It's too early to speak about results. Like I said we had a good, positive first day, and Sebastian had a good couple of days," he said.

"We'll try to do our best, and I'm sure if we keep doing our work as a team we'll push forward as a team with two cars, improving things, we can get some good results.

"Time will tell. We definitely going in the right direction, for sure, that's the good thing. We'll have to wait and see in the races."

Raikkonen puts Ferrari back on top as Jerez test ends04 Feb 2015

Kimi Raikkonen ensured Ferrari ended the first pre-season test of 2015 on top by going fastest on the fourth and final day at Jerez.

The Scuderia's new SF15-T had already topped the first and second days in the hands of Sebastian Vettel, and Raikkonen carried on that momentum by setting the best time of the test on Wednesday, dipping down to 1m 20.841s to finish comfortably clear of the chasing pack

Unofficial Wednesday testing times from Jerez

1. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1m 20.841s, 106 laps

2. Felipe Nasr, Sauber, 1m 22.019s, 112 laps

Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard has backed four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel to succeed at Ferrari after his move to the Italian marque for the 2015 season.

Vettel exercised a clause in his Red Bull contract to leave the team at the end of 2014, drawing the curtain on a 15-year long association with the energy drink brand.

The German driver has claimed all of his grand prix victories with Red Bull-owned teams, prompting many to question whether he can enjoy the same kind of success with Ferrari – a team that has fallen on hard times in recent years.

However, Coulthard is confident Vettel will be successful at Ferrari, telling Die Welt that the German driver faces less of a challenge in rebuilding the prancing horse than he did at Red Bull.

“Vettel is a winning machine like [Michael] Schumacher,” Coulthard said. “His four titles with Red Bull speak for themselves.

“Why should a driver like Vettel not succeed at Ferrari? I think it was much more difficult to build Red Bull into a top team. Red Bull had no history and no experience in F1, yet Vettel managed to win four titles with them. To me, this is a huge achievement.”

Coulthard also said that Ferrari’s winning mentality could aid Vettel’s bid for future race wins and world championships at the Italian marque.

“Have a look at Ferrari,” the Scotsman said. “This is a team built on traditions that has won an unbelievable number of races.

“They know how to celebrate triumphs at Maranello. They have a winning DNA there.”

Vettel enjoyed a successful first public test for Ferrari in Jerez this week, finishing as the fastest driver on both of his days in the car. He will next try out the SF15-T in Barcelona in two weeks’ time, where the second and third pre-season tests will be held.

:36_11_6: Jaaaaa swaer.
