Tour to Bangladesh

I was looking at the Test Squad and got thinking what the team should look like against Bangladesh. Given that we will be playing on a typical peat bog, it's not that easy. I decided to go with a 7-2-2 make-up ( with the 7 batsmen including the keeper De Kock), and two seamers and two specialist spinners. Duminy would be a bonus. Thus:

Elgar, De Kock, Faf, Amla, Van Zyl, Duminy, Bavuma, Harmer, Phangiso, Morkel, Steyn.   Batting order is somewhat flexible. Sitting out:  Vilas, Ramala, Hendricks, Philander

Not sure what the Quota implications are.

Any thoughts? What have I missed?

Almost spot on uncle Dennis!

Test 2:

Vilas replaces De Kock and takes the gloves, I think this is a good move - took a brilliant catch off Duminy. De Kock needs to go sort his temperament out, getting out to loose shots in all formats.

Interesting test on the go.

...and then dropped a somewhat difficult one a bit later. By and large I like his demeanour behind the sticks, and although I'm far from an expert, I think his technique seems better than Quinton's.

It will be interesting to see how he fares with the bat (if we get a chance to bat, with all this bloody monsoon rain). Which idiot decided to arrange a tour in the monsoon season?

I wonder how much cricket Quinton will be able to get so that he can get some practice?

Thato I not sure Vilas is a pure wicketkeeper. He never got the gloves for the Lions and when he moved to the Cobras they used to give Puttick the gloves in front of him.

Thato, just seen that Qde K is included in the SA "A" side to go to India shortly!  It sounds like if he has a good tour, scores runs, and keeps better, he might come back for the Proteas India tour. But, he is going to have to prove himself.

Talking to one or two keepers who have watched Quinton and Vilas, both said that Vilas is the better keeper, with better basic technique. Very different type of batsman though.

Yes it's wonderful organisation. When SA eventually get a game, it's in the middle of the rain season.

Basically it's the only time we can tour Bangladesh.

4 test series against India and England coming up.

Colossal waste of everyone's time and effort! All it does is it erodes our stats and boosts theirs.  Complete disappointment. Might as well come home.

Selection of the squad going to India is going to be of considerable interest, and probably debate.

Spinner - did Harmer fare any better than the two part-timers?

Seamers - are we confident of the current crop? Rabada? Parnell? Anyone else - maybe watch SA "A" offerings?

Keeper - will Vilas go? [Is he the better keeper, as most ex-keepers I know claim?]  Will De Kock fare well enough for SA "A" to fight his way back in? Is this good enough indication of future form?

Batsmen - Can they afford to leave out Riley? Bavuma?  Who will partner Dean Elgar? Will we continue with the 7 batsman model?

Plenty questions!

Batting, however, has traditionally been Vilas’s area of potency as he averages 41 in first-class cricket overall with his actual glovework rather being the concern. Not being a natural gloveman in the mould of the gifted Thami Tsolekile has had its drawbacks on occasion,

It's beginning to look as if there is more to this than meets the eye. QDK has now been dropped for the proven failure van Wyk for the next ODIs

Grandpa Van Wyk?  Didn't see that one coming!

SA "A" -  looks like a bit of a thrashing at the hands of the Shagger "A"s.  Bowling attack in particular looked pretty toothless. Let's see if they settle down later on.

Of course. Why not Vilas who is a manufactured keeper and is better suited to the shorter format anyway. Van Wyk is a stop gap at his age so can easily be discarded. The only reason Vilas was in Bangladesh in the first place is because AB was on paternity leave and they needed a reserve keeper in case QdK was injured.

Somewhere along the line it was decided QdK needed a kick up the arse and is not an automatic choice. There is no shame in that, everyone has been dropped at some stage, even Bradman.

The question is how he handles it. Hopefully he will be a better player for it. It's up to him.
