Contador stuns Froome at Dauphine Alberto Contador laid down a Tour de France marker by storming to victory on Sunday's opening prologue of the Criterium du Dauphine. Two-time Tour winner Contador set a stunning time of 11min 36sec in the 3.9km uphill time-trial to win by six seconds from Australian Richie Porte. But perhaps more importantly, the 33-year-old Spaniard beat reigning Tour champion Chris Froome into third by 13sec. Contador, who has never won this race before, suggested on the eve of the Dauphine that he was unsure of his form and was more interested in improving his physical condition than eyeing overall victory.

In-form javelin throw specialist Sunette Viljoen and sprinter Carina Horn will carry the South African flag at the sixth leg of the IAAF Diamond League series in Birmingham on Sunday. Having cemented her place as the top thrower in the world this year, after earning another Diamond League win in Rome on Thursday, Viljoen will look to launch a bigger effort and boost her confidence again in the build-up to the Rio Olympics in August. Leading the world after producing a heave of 65.14m at the Diamond League opener in Doha last month, Viljoen is up against a strong field which includes the trio of Christina Obergfoll of Germany, Kathryn Mitchell of Australia and Madara Palamaika of Latvia, all of whom have all gone over 64m this year. They will be eager to knock the South African off her perch. Horn, who shares the national record of 11.06 with Evette de Klerk, turns out in the women's 100m sprint.

While former world No 1s Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy made erratic starts, long-hitting American Dustin Johnson charged into a one-shot lead at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, on Thursday. Taking advantage of pristine conditions with a superb all-round game at leafy Muirfield Village, Johnson racked up 10 birdies and two bogeys in the opening round of the prestigious event hosted by Jack Nicklaus.

All eyes will be on world champion Wayde van Niekerk, who leads a full-strength South African onslaught on Thursday night as he makes his highly anticipated international season debut at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Rome. Van Niekerk, who clocked 44.11 seconds at the ASA Open Championships in Bloemfontein last month, is the fastest man in the field this season for the 400m race. He faces a line-up including in-form Bralon Taplin of Grenada, who set a Personal Best of 44.41 in Tempe last month, former World Championships relay silver medallist Rusheen McDonald of Jamaica and African champion Isaac Makwala of Botswana. Van Niekerk will be joined by seven other SA athletes at the fifth leg of the top-flight international track and field campaign.

England's Chris Wood is eyeing a spot in the Ryder Cup and the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after his win in the European PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday. Wood put himself in the frame for a place in the European team, under Darren Clarke at Hazeltine, with his one million euro ($1.11 million) prize money, but still has to overtake one of Danny Willett and Justin Rose in the world rankings to make the Great Britain team for Rio.

Danny Willett veered from the sublime to the ridiculous, following a record 29 on the front nine with an inward half of 39 as he shared the second-round lead at the BMW PGA Championship in Virginia Water, England, on Friday. The US Masters winner surged to the top of the leaderboard alongside South Korean Yang Yong-eun (69) and Scott Hend (69) of Australia after a scintillating burst of scoring on another sunny day at Wentworth that yielded six birdies in seven holes to the ninth. The journey home was a completely different story, though, as Willett frittered away stroke after stroke before a birdie at the long 18th gave him a four-under-par 68 and a 10-under tally of 134 at the European Tour's flagship event.

  12. Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he has already decided what his next move will be - and Sky sources understand Manchester United are the only Premier League option he has considered. Ibrahimovic is a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and he confirmed on Thursday that he has had "concrete offers" from England, Italy and other clubs including some outside of Europe.
