Finn and Wood are injured.

so end of the line for Bell.

Bell had to go - his form has been decidedly ordinary.

Finn and Wood would have been handy but I can't how England will take 20 wickets. As we saw in the Ashes they are bog ordinary without their preferred conditions

My hope is for fair wickets allowing a fair contest.

I hate seeing a decent team rolled for a hundred and a bit and the contest is essentially over by tea on the first day.

3 - day tests are rubbish for all concerned, but especially for the spectator and the hot dog vendor.

One certainly hopes that every Protea possible will get a run in the upcoming Sunfoil round of matches on 17 Dec (barring injury like Steyn, where more rest might be better than a run). His place is secure after all.  Performances here could be crucial, depending on when the team/squad announcement is expected. Is there a requirement by when teams/squads have to be announced? Could they wait till after the games have finished on Monday?

De Kock's imminent return raises interesting questions. If he comes in as opener, who will Keep? Vilas? Who drops to open a spot?  Van Zyl?  A bit harsh.  If he comes in as keeper, do you drop Vilas, for whom the tour was a cyanide pill (quoting Neil M). Who opens with Elgar? Van Zyl? Bavuma? Is he a real opener? Will he be panel-beaten into one?

One wonders what kind of pitches are likely to be prepared. Will the squad require 3 specialist spinners (plus the two part-timers?)  I doubt it.   If we prepare nice bouncy seam-friendly tracks, would it not make more sense to go in with a full 4 seamer attack plus the two part-timers?    MM, DS (if fit), KA, plus Rabada?

It will be interesting to see how much tinkering the Selectors are prepared to do/ not do, and this should give us an idea of the effects of the ill-fated India expedition and the mindset of the team.

Poms have just been pumped by Pakistan in a Test series but won the short form stuff (sound familiar). I reckon there will be no hangover from the Indian tour -  at home with the likes of Steyn back in I think it will be business as usual.

Still need an opener. Bavuma will probably get another chance. Personally I would bring in Stiaan or Rilee in at 6 for Duminy. QdK should slot in at 7. Piedt will probably be the spinner.

Would go along with taipan's suggestions.

I think we should prepare fast bouncy tracks not green seamers.  Green pitches bring anderson and Coenie Oosthuizen into the game while fast hard tracks will favor our faster bowlers.

Assume we prefer those tracks this would be my team:

1.cook/puttick (will be bavuma)

2.Elgar

3.Amla

4.AB

5.Faf

6.Stian/Rillee(Will be jp)

7.QDK

8.Philander(If not fit abbot should play but will be radaba...)

9.Steyn

10.Piedt

11.Morkel

If the pitch is green:

1.Cook/puttick(bavuma...)

2.Elgar

3.Amla

4.AB

5.Faf

6.Stian/Rilee(JP)

7.QDK

8.Philander/Radaba

9.Steyn

10.Abbot

11.Morkel

I agree but don't think it will be Rabada. He must go back to FC and do some learning.

I agree but we know the Elephant in the room that will get him selected.

I see from faf's blog those that played all 3 formats won't be playing the sunfoil games in the lead up to the tests. He claims its more important to be fresh..I think some runs and time in the middle would be good for the batsmen...

Agreed. If they were all in form then they could rest. And there is the small problem of the totally different conditions, This is exactly the reason why we have battled in the first home test for the past 10 years.

Klusener: KP deserves his place

5 talking points: India v Proteas

Dolphins gain KP, Cobras lose Kemp

Cape Town - Seam bowler Vernon Philander will miss the Proteas’ opening two Tests against England due to an ankle injury.

Philander tore ligaments in his ankle when playing soccer in a warm-up shortly before South Africa’s second Test against India in Bangalore last month.

The Proteas are also sweating on the fitness of fast bowler Dale Steyn, who missed the last two Tests in India with a groin injury.

Meanwhile, Stiaan van Zyl, Temba Bavuma, Simon Harmer and Dane Piedt will all play in the first round of the domestic Sunfoil Series next week to get more game time.

The first of four Tests against England starts in Durban from December 26, with the selectors expected to announce the SA Test squad for the series later this week

So duminy who can't buy a run to save himself for months doesn't need to show he deserves a test spot? Hash and faf should also be spending time in the middle. Also Villas should be playing to show he deserves the spot above qdk.

Probably a long shot and a pipe dream, but he probably have another 4 years in him if the hunger is still there. I love his guts, but he will have to really show he can still do it. A bit too late maybe?
