Louis van Gaal has been sacked as manager of Manchester United, with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho set to be named as his replacement.

Van Gaal, 64, leaves after two years of a three-year contract and is currently discussing severance terms.

The former Netherlands boss is believed to earn around £6.4m a year.

Mourinho's appointment is expected to be confirmed after the 53-year-old Portuguese meets with senior United officials on Tuesday.

It is not yet certain what future Ryan Giggs, Van Gaal's assistant, has at Old Trafford or what will happen to the rest of the coaching team.

Chelsea keeper Asmir Begovic says the one-year contract

offered to John Terry is a good move by the club.

Former England defender Terry looked all set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, after more than 17 years at the club, but a late decision to offer the 35-year-old an extended deal has been welcomed by his team-mate Begovic.

Terry signed the deal last week, and Begovic told Sky Sports News HQ: "It's very important. John's a legend and always will be, and is a great person to have around.

Vardy may have to wing it - Hodgson

England manager Roy Hodgson defended his decision to deploy Jamie Vardy in a wide role after the Leicester City striker struck the winner in a 2-1 success against Turkey.

Vardy scored 24 goals from a central role to fire Leicester to Premier League glory this season, only to find himself lining up on the left flank in a 4-3-3 formation in Sunday's Euro 2016 warm-up match at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

But after being moved into the centre, he won a second-half penalty, which strike partner Harry Kane squandered, before netting a close-range winner in the 83rd minute to take his tally to three goals in three England games.

"We need to be able to play both systems," said Hodgson, whose team will also play Australia and Portugal prior to Euro 2016.

France said on Wednesday it will deploy more than 60 000 police to provide security for Euro 2016 as it vowed to do "everything possible to avoid a terrorist attack" during the tournament that starts next month.

The comments from Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve came after the Stade de France in Paris, which will host the event's opening match and final, descended into chaos on Saturday before the national cup final after smoke bombs were set off inside the stadium, sparking panic among crowds that clustered at the stadium's exits.

Atletico Madrid blew the chance to win the Champions League after their shoot-out defeat to Real Madrid.

Sergio Ramos gave Real the lead in the 15th minute but, after Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty, Atletico levelled late on through Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco.

Heading into extra-time the momentum seemed to be with Atletico, who were looking to avenge their 2014 final defeat to Real.

However, neither side could find a winner and Juanfran hit the post with Atletico's fourth penalty to give Cristiano Ronaldo the chance to seal victory for Real.

One remaining financial issue is expected to be sorted out by the close of business, allowing an American investment group to take charge of the Premier League club.
